Microsoft makes Cloud App Security service generally available

Microsoft’s Cloud App Security Service — the product based on its Adallom acquisition — is generally available as of April 6.

Microsoft bought cloud-security vendor Adallom in September 2015 for an undisclosed amount. Adallom’s technology monitored the use of software-as-a-service applications from Salesforce, Google, Amazon, Dropbox and Microsoft, among others.

The new Microsoft Cloud App Security service, likewise, monitors cloud applications. According to Microsoft’s blog post announcing its availability, the Cloud App Security service “provides a set of capabilities to help companies design and enforce a process for securing cloud usage; from discovery and investigation capabilities, to granular control and protection.”

Stopping staff using certain web services may be in decline outside regulatory environments, but even where it is being attempted it may be falling well short of its aims.

The new service goes beyond basic discovery to include data control and threat protection, as well, Microsoft execs said. The new service is integrated with Microsoft Office 365, as well.

Microsoft is touting Cloud App Security as a way for companies to discover “Shadow IT” setups, as the service can identify more than 13,000 apps that are being used.
