LINE messenger gets end-to-end encryption by default
The popular LINE messaging app now comes with end-to-end encryption switched on by default. LINE announced the decision to enable ‘Letter Sealing’ by default a few days ago and now urges users to upgrade their apps to the latest version to get the functionality.
LINE took to its blog to say:
“As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing privacy and security for our users, we are pleased to announce that from July, LINE is introducing “Letter Sealing (End-to-end Encryption)” as a default feature.”
Letter Sealing is available for all LINE users and those who are using the Hidden Chat feature can now get the “same peace of mind and sense of security from LINE’s main 1:1 chats” without having to use separate Hidden Chat rooms. As a result of the change, LINE has dropped support for the Hidden Chat feature.
LINE is quite late to the encryption game when compared with competitors like iMessage and WhatsApp, which already come with end-to-end encryption switched on by default.
LINE was first launched in 2011 and amassed 100 million users within the first 18 months of launch, as of February 2015 it boasts 600 million users.
