Remote Desktop App from Microsoft Now Available for Windows 10

After several weeks of testing functionality and features in a preview app, Microsoft announced that they are now releasing their Built for Windows 10 Remote Desktop app for Windows 10 PCs and mobile devices.

One of the big draws of this app for any of you who might have the Lumia 950 & 950 XL Windows 10 Mobile handsets is that it now has Continuum compatibility.

This means you can remotely access other systems with the app and get the full screen experience when using those phones with a Display Dock and larger monitor.

Although this app has come out of preview mode there are still some features that have not made it into the Windows 10 UWP app at this point.

Those unavailable options include:

  • Multiple simultaneous connections
  • Dynamic resolution and rotation
  • Printer redirection
  • Smartcard redirection
  • Microphone support
  • Localized app (currently English only)

The team states over on the Remote Desktop Services Blog that although the app is on longer in preview mode that does not mean works stops on its development.

Exiting preview doesn’t mean we are done, quite the opposite. We have a set of features already in the works and will continue monitoring the Store comments and our feature requests site to help us focus on the next set of features and you can expect regular updates to the app.

The Remote Desktop Preview app will continue to be available because the team will use that as a channel to test new features before they are released to the main Remote Desktop app.

By the way, both the main and preview app can be installed on the same system without any conflicts.

But, wait…there’s probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.
