Guciffer 2.0 denies ties to Russian intelligence – acted at ‘own risk’

The hacker who claims to have breached the servers of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in the US has denied any connections with Russia.

He is known as Guccifer 2.0 and denied the allegation of CrowdStrike, a security company investigating the case of the DNC breach.

“I’ll tell you that everything I do I do at my own risk. This is my personal project and I’m proud of it,” he wrote, refuting CrowdStrike’s claim that he had links to Russia or its special services on his WordPress blog.

Guccifer 2.0 claimed he hacked the DNC servers successfully and revealed documents including opposition research on Donald Trump and documents related to the Clinton Foundation. He also claimed that thousands of documents and emails stolen from the DNC have been handed to WikiLeaks and will be published soon.

Bernie Sander’s supporters have filed a lawsuit against the DNC and the chairperson, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, primarily based on the leaked documents by Guccifer 2.0 in June 2016, according to RT.com.

In a Q&A blog post Guccifer  wrote that he is from eastern Europe and praised himself as one of the best hackers currently living on earth. He didn’t mention any country but his point of view about Moldova seems suspicious. “As for Moldova, I think it’s a part of Romania, so there’s no reason to speak about it separately,” Guccifer 2.0 said.

He named Snowden and Assange as his heroes in the computer age. “People who are smart and brave, who are eager to fight for their ideals, who can sacrifice themselves for the better future,” he added.

In addition, Marcel Lazar, who was the original Guccifer, was hailed as a hero by him. “He inspired me and showed me the way. He proved that even the powers that be have weak points.”

Even though there are numerous assumptions, the real intention behind the hack seems vague. The language used by Guccifer 2.0 in the blog posts suggests he wanted to be heard and was seeking fame:

“No one knew about me several weeks ago. Nowadays the whole world’s talking about me. It’s really cool!”

He also wrote: “Well, it was pretty interesting to wait until I was discovered. Really, it took them much longer than I expected.… It was breathtaking! And of course I was waiting for an appropriate moment to speak loud.”

On the other hand, the revealed documents targeted Hillary Clinton heavily and caused dissension among the Democratic Party. This could possibly influence the flow of the US presidential election, reinforcing suspicions that the motives for this attack were something other than an act of bravery to fight for ideals.
